We finally broke down and bought a wii. The last video system we owned was in the early 90s and I think it was Sega. We learned pretty quickly when Josh was little that he did not need video games, he needed to be outside burning off energy. I guess as the kids got older we all just stayed too busy for video games. So...Bryan and I were walking through Target and saw the wii on sale after the holidays and decided to make the leap and get one. Wow, have video games changed in the last 20 years - they are so interactive now!

I'll spare you photos of me doing Zumba with the wii, but here's Emri playing our "Abba - Just Dance" game.

Pinterest, my newest addiction

Yes, I know - exercise should be my newest addiction, but sadly I have fallen for pinterest instead. I heard someone say Pinterest is for women, like Fantasy Football is for guys, and I have to agree. I have found all kinds of great gift ideas, recipes, fashion and home ideas. My first pinterest inspired project was this chalkboard picture for Jenni and Erin's place.

She said I was so proud of myself, especially since I couldn't say many other things. And well, with the addition of the lipstick - I think this necklace is practically perfect in every way!

2012 - I have high hopes for you!

I'm still working on my official goals for 2012, but I have high hopes that I can knock several things off my to-do list.

Passports - Bryan and I both need valid passports. We filled out our paperwork last year and just never followed through.

Healthy home-cooked meals 4 nights a week, including meatless Monday dinners. (I'm hoping this doesn't mean veggie pizza take out every Monday)

Routine exercise, cardio and strength training, my oncologist wants 5-6 days a week out of me. I didn't do so well in 2011 on this, but I am determined to do better in 2012. These bones need some jarring to combat this gift of osteoporosis that chemo gave me.

Spend more time, make more memories with family and friends.

Explore at least three new places in 2012- visit, shop and eat like the locals!

This should get me started, and then I can formulate S.M.A.R.T. goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) from my ideas.

On New Years Day we had a lunch birthday celebration for Chassi and Chadd. Chassi turned 28 on the 1st, and Chadd will be 40 on January 3rd. Lisa arranged for Chadd's parents, niece and nephew to come from Missouri to surprise him.

This past year I have been determined to get rid of clutter, and only bring things in to my life that bring me joy, or serve a purpose. I have enjoyed making gifts for friends that I hope will make them smile and I hope to do much more of that in 2012.

The magic of Christmas

Josh, Chassi and the kids and Jenni spent the night on Christmas eve and we made cookies (my Granny's recipe) and tracked Santa on Norad. Tracking Santa's trip on norad was quite a geography lesson. They do a great job of telling you about each area and we had our globe by the computer so we could see right where he was, in relation to Nashville. Anna Belle is right on the verge of not believing in Santa anymore. We all talked about how magical Christmas is when you still believe. I read a great explanation of Santa from a mom to her daughter recently, and I'll share it here:

Dear Lucy,
Thank you for your letter. You asked a very good question: “Are you Santa?”
I know you’ve wanted the answer to this question for a long time, and I’ve had to give it careful thought to know just what to say.
The answer is no. I am not Santa. There is no one Santa.

I had my yearly visit with Dr. Wagstrom (my plastic surgeon) and it went very well. My implants are holding steady and staying soft, due to the daily vitamin E dosages. This visit is always pleasant and they have such a calming and beautiful office. From the day I met her, I knew she was the plastic surgeon for me. I had no problems during or after surgery and I know the doctors and nurses had a lot to do with that.
If you ever need a plastic surgeon - call Dr. Wagstrom. I love everyone in her office and she did a great job for me!

I am proud to be an American. I celebrate the right to freedom of speech. I also celebrate the right I have to listen, or not listen to people practice their freedom of speech. I personally find it offensive when people participate in name-calling and trashing the leaders of our nation. I think people can disagree without stooping to hateful statements. I didn't agree with it when the Republicans were in office, and I don't agree with it now. I think if we want our children to respect their parents, teachers and public officials we have to show them how to disagree with respect for the positions these people hold.

I plan to research, watch the debates and make my own personal voting decision for the upcoming election. My dream and prayer, is that whoever is in office will be supported by the majority and that both parties will work together for the best interest of our country.

Well here we are again, another year has passed us by and it’s time for the annual newsletter. We hope this year has been kind to you and yours and that you have created some priceless memories with those you love.

For the Hall family, this year has been full of highs and lows. In June, Laura celebrated her 3^rd year as a cancer survivor, and for this we are very grateful. In July we lost a family member, Dan, to a tragic accident. Dan leaves behind Deanna (Bryan’s sister), Lauren and Logan. Please keep them in your prayers as they learn to navigate life without their wonderful husband and father. This event reminded us once again how precious life can be, and how important it is to embrace and appreciate each other and every day we are given.

Here's a little about our lives this past year-
Bryan continues his day job with Verizon Wireless. The addition of the iphone to the VZW line up has kept things churning at work. During his spare time, Bryan continues to enjoy photography, cycling and music. He also has a strong attraction to any TV show containing shark wars, swamp people or mobsters.

Laura changed jobs this past year and now spends her days training clinic and hospital staff how to use electronic medical records. Laura’s territory includes middle and west TN, which allows her to visit friends and family along the way. She also loves exploring antique and other eclectic shops on her journeys. This along with pinterest, inspires many craft projects!

Josh and Chassi live in Franklin and are constantly on the run with their three little girls. Josh works for Gibson Guitar and continues to enjoy running. This year he completed the San Francisco Marathon and he continues to look for new and more difficult challenges. Chassi is a stay at home mom, and also watches children in their home. Chassi completed her first triathlon this year and plans to run the ½ marathon in April. Josh and Chassi attend the Journey in Franklin and recently became “village” leaders at their church.

Anna Belle is 8 years old, in 2^nd grade and is excelling academically. She is very independent, always curious and loves to read. Anna inherited her parent’s love of running and ran her first official race this year with a 9 minute mile. Anna has a big heart and is a wonderful big sister.

Morgan is almost 7, and in 1^st grade. Morgan loves gymnastics and is flexible and very strong. Morgan walks (and dresses) to the beat of her own drum and is witty, silly, nurturing and many times mysterious. She is really beginning to enjoy school and is doing very well this year. Morgan is an amazing sister.

Emri is now 4 years old and keeps everyone on their toes. Emri has two speeds – full throttle and asleep. Emri is full of spirit and loves to sing lyrics from Fry’s opera on Futurama. She loves to play house with Crackle (the dog), and tells him “Now I’ll be the mom, and you be the dog” – so far he is compliant. Emri completes the household by bringing lots of fun, craziness and laughter to the home. She adores her two big sisters!

Jenni is our very own Mary Poppins. Jenni spends her days as a nanny to a precious little one year old named Charlee Joy. Charlee’s parents work in the music industry and feel very blessed to have Jenni in their lives. www.jthodges.com In her spare time, Jenni continues to enjoy music, photography, fashion and travel – in addition to being an awesome Aunt Jenni!

There have been many times this past year we have all stopped and said how much we look forward to the day when life slows down, but most days we just hang on and enjoy the ride.

Never miss a chance to say I love you...

I've talked to several friends and family members lately who have lost someone that is very precious to them this past year. The holiday season is a tough one when you are missing someone you love. My mom passed away right before Thanksgiving in 2000, and her birthday is December 27th. I always miss her even more during this season. She loved the holidays, and always made them a little brighter.

We are of course also missing Dan, my brother in law who died almost 5 months ago. This will be a tough holiday for Deanna, Logan and Lauren as well as everyone who's life he touched. I hope we can all help to make it a little easier for them.

As I write this, I know of at least three people who are fighting for their life against cancer and I know each day is a gift for them as well. I am inspired by their determination to live each day to the fullest and to let those around them know how much they mean. It inspires me to do the same, because in reality none of us have that guarantee of tomorrow.

Thank you God for today, and let our actions show your love to every person we encounter!

It's a Wonderful Life

We always enjoy attending the "Wonderful Life Foundation" event each December. This year the movie and party was moved to War Memorial. The event has grown so large, they have outgrown the Belcourt and hosting the after party in their home.

This year was the 8th year, and it included a silent auction this year and Jenni got a nice hair/facial package from Imagine and I got some beautiful red candle holders from Knobstoppers. There were some great items at the auction and I think this will become an annual addition to the event.

Last year they were able to provide help for 5 families and this year they plan to do even more. One thing I love about this foundation is that every penny raised goes directly to the families they help. The cost of showing of the movie, rental space and after party are all taken care of by sponsors.

If you didn't join us this year, plan to attend the 1st Saturday in December of 2012!

My friends Mickey, Sandy and I hosted a "Redneck Holiday Party" last weekend. We decided to have a party that even cousin Eddie would love.

Jenni made us a perfect party playlist and we came up with some creative and delicious foods!

Menu:
Pigs in a blanket in the shape of a wreath w/a fruit roll up bow, Sausage Balls, Chicken Biscuits, Hot Wings, Tater tots wrapped in bacon, Redneck Sushi, PB&J Sushi, Mac n' Cheese Tarts, Jalapeno Cheese Bread, Queso/chips, Roadkill cheeseball, Veggies, Fruit, Cookies galore, Mississippi Mud Brownies, Espresso Brownies, Mexican Wedding Cookies and a Moon Pie Christmas Tree!

We ended the evening with a "Dirty Santa" gift exchange. The most traded gifts of the night were a Ralphie bobble-head, and Santa Pants. A good time was had by all!

The Franklin Theater has been restored and is open for business. They did a great job of restoration and they are showing some classic movies on the weekends and admission is only $5.00. The theater is also hosting live music and theater nights.

Lifetime friends

My work territory includes Lawrenceburg, TN. This also happens to be where Allison, one of my childhood friends lives. Amber, another childhood friend lives 20 minutes or so from Lawrenceburg. So...Amber met me in Lawrenceburg and we drove over to the school where Allison is a first grade teacher and surprised her! I wish I had taken a photo of her face when she saw us walk up to her door. She screamed and burst into tears. After much hugging, we headed to Dairy Queen for sundaes and to catch up.

Then I headed to Florence to Amber's house for a slumber party complete with delicious Mexican food and a scary movie. I love my friends!

I am intrigued by the National Novel Writing Month. The challenge is to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. It's supposed to get your creative juices flowing and you hopefully come out of it with a first draft at a piece of literature. The challenge is to write 1,700 words each day. I've been reading a book called "No plot, no problem" and they help you prepare for this challenge. Since today is day 1, I am not sure I will make it this year, but I wrote my 1700 words and we will see how tomorrow goes.

Dr. Whitworth visit

I had an appointment at Dr. Whitworth's office today (October 31st) and his nurse was dressed in a pink tutu and tiara - I forgot to get her photo, but it really helped me relax before the exam. I'm still having some transient nerve pain on my right side, but they say that is normal and should eventually get better. It's reassuring to know that these things happen to other people and are nothing to worry about.

This is my 4th Komen Race for the cure since my diagnosis, and evidently it was the biggest cancer walk Nashville has ever hosted. That first year was a blur, I had just finished my chemo and I walked purely on adrenaline and support from my friends. This year I really enjoyed walking and catching up with friends. When I see other ladies who are obviously in the middle of their treatment it certainly takes me back to those hard days.

I want to thank everyone who supported me during my surgery and treatment, and all the days since. Everyone should be lucky enough to have friends and family like you!

The Grand Ole Opry turned pink for one night, and the even the Titan stadium went from blue to pink in support of breast cancer.

Camping at Fall Creek Falls, Pikeville, TN

I thought as an adult I would not cave to peer pressure, but when my dinner club friends invited us camping, in October, I decided to join in. Camping is not bad, I've camped before. Anyone that knows me knows that I love fire - I love candles, bonfires and as a youngster I loved making burned paper pictures. The scenario even got better, the campsite had a bath-house, a plug for electricity and you could drive up to the campsite. It's the OCTOBER part that I didn't fully take into account.

So we set out to Fall Creek Falls family campground. Bryan actually went up on Friday night with some of the guys, and I followed on Saturday with Catherine. We had a large roomy tent, an air mattress and warm sleeping bags. We ate delicious burgers, tenderloin, veggies, smores, popcorn and cider. The guys played football, we tried out the swings and took a walk. We didn't take into account the COLD! I almost bought a heater to take with us. Had I done this, it would have been a much better night. Catherine and I almost froze, but we made it through the night and came out alive. There's another one to mark off the bucket list - camping in October!

If anyone wants to ask me to go camping - let's make it in the early fall or spring. Never again when it's 30 degrees outside!

Raising money for cancer research

I feel a bit guilty when people ask if I want them to donate to my Komen for the Cure team. I know the importance of getting those research dollars and I appreciate everyone who donates. The reason I feel a bit guilty is because there are other cancer's that don't get as much recognition and I have friends who have some of those other types of cancer.

If you want to donate to breast cancer research - do me a favor - give my team half of the amount you were planning to give and the give the remainder of your donation to Melanoma, Colon Cancer or another less popular cancer.

Bryan and I recently joined "Team Willett" for the Miles for Melanoma walk. This was the first annual walk and they had a good turnout, but it was small compared to Komen. We plan on making this an annual event and would love for you to join us. Amy Willett is a fabulous wife, mother and friend who is battling melanoma and I am sure she would be honored to have you donate in her honor.

Amber, my best friend is in remission from colon cancer. I don't even know if there is a colon cancer walk in Nashville, but I need to find out. I want to walk and raise funds for her too!

Let's support and pray for these researchers who are working hard on finding cures for these cancers!

A trip with friends...

Many times through the years when Bryan and I have been dining with our dinner club friends we've said, we should really take a trip together. We always have great intentions, sometimes we even pick the location, but actually making it happen is almost impossible.

Well...we finally made it happen! Bryan and I took a California vacation with our friends Abbey, Jamie and Catherine and it couldn't have gone more smoothly. Even with us all flying in to SFO with different arrival times, and creating an itinerary that kept us on the road a lot of the time we had a wonderful and relaxing time. I have posted pictures on my travel blog if you want to see glimpses of our adventures.

Dinner theater in Chattanooga?

Some of my girlfriends and I have been looking for fun outings to spend time together. One of my former supervisors in Chattanooga told me about the Vaudeville Cafe and Mystery Dinner Theater. They have a Saturday night show called the "Redneck/Italian Wedding". This sounded like such fun. Some of us had attended Tony and Tina's wedding in Chicago several years ago and it was hilarious and we all had a great time.
So we loaded up our cars and drove to Chattanooga for the evening. I'll have to admit, the best part was the drive there and back where we all caught up on each other's lives and laughed and commiserated about life's ups and downs. It was fabulous being together. I wasn't too impressed with the show or food. The show had some funny moments, but didn't hold a candle to the one we attended in Chicago where you are actually incorporated into the event.

Every three weeks or so I go to west TN for work. I usually spend a day in Memphis and a day in Jackson. I always try to go by and see Kim at work in Jackson, but this time I got Amber to come up and meet us too. We had a delicious dinner at Snookum's Steakhouse with some high school friends - Stacy and Judy. What a wonderful night with great friends!

Race for the Cure - October 29th

This year's Race for the Cure will be October 29th in Maryland Farms. My friend and former boss Denise and I will be co-captains this year. This year I will be walking as a 3 year survivor and Denise will be walking as a 1 year survivor.
We were some of the lucky ones who caught our breast cancers early. Combining that, with some of the best doctors on this earth who guided each of us through successful surgeries and treatment, we are happy to announce that we are both cancer free! I don't think either of us could have done any of this without our fabulous network of supportive friends and family members.
We hope you will join team "Fight like a Girl" and walk with us on October 29th. If you can't be here in person, please send up a prayer and a good thought for those of us walking on that day.

Dan Cole - American Hero

We got a call Saturday night that you never want to get. My brother in law Dan had been killed in a flight accident. Dan has been a pilot and mechanic for the National Guard for about 20 years. Dan loved flying and knew his helicopters inside and out. Dan has served our country in Kosovo and Iraq. I guess when he came home from those tours we all just breathed a sigh of relief, but as we all know too well - there are no guarantees in this life.

Dan is a few years younger than me, but I've known him all my life. He grew up on Hill street in Henderson; I grew up on North. Our lives, like so many in a small town were always intertwined. We went to school, summer camp and church together and our parent's are good friends. We used to laugh about how Bryan and Deanna went away to college to meet new people and broaden their horizons...and both ended up marrying "townies".

Dan was a great guy. He proudly loved and served his country, but he also loved and served his fellow man and God. Dan was a wonderful friend who always had a smile on his face and brought joy and laughter to all those around him. This has been so evident from all the notes and stories that people have written about Dan online and all the comments we have heard from his fellow soldiers.

Dan and Deanna have two beautiful children Lauren (12) and Logan (8). They adored their Daddy! On Saturday, Dan flew over their house and had Logan come out and wave up at him. This happened just a few hours before the accident. I know in years to come that memory will become even more precious to Logan.

Dentist

Ugh...I cracked a tooth. The tooth that is cracked has a very old filling in it - it's a 8 or 10 year old molar so the filling has probably been there for a long long time. I made a trip to the dentist to get the tooth fixed and my heart was pounding. I kept telling myself, you've survived surgeries and chemo - why are you letting a little dental work get you so nervous?!

Anyway, they ended up giving me some nitrous oxide to help me relax and whoa! I had forgotten how great that stuff was. They could have done anything to that tooth and I probably wouldn't have cared a bit. I told the nurse, I was going to suggest they have nitrous piped in to every chemo room in America!

4th of July/Canada Day

We attended a wonderful cookout to celebrate the 4th of July and Canada day at the McGrath home in Franklin. Sean is from Canada and Nikki is from America. The day was full of games, delicious food and American and Canadian music!

Baby Dedication Day

Jenni is working as a nanny for an adorable baby girl named Charlee Joy. I went with Jenni to Charlee's dedication on Sunday and it was a beautiful spirit filled service at the Collie's home. What an amazing bunch of people! I am so thankful that Jenni has great people to work with. They seem to love her as much as she loves them.

Bryan and I celebrated our 28th anniversary while on vacation. We snuck away from the group and headed to Grayton Beach for a date night. The Red Bar was packed with vacationers so we chose to eat at Shorty's Topside Grill across the street and had delicious dinner of Steak, Shrimp and Crab. After dinner we took a short walk on the beach in the moonlight. (and I tried to snap our photo in the dark)

Family Vacation 2011

We just returned from our annual family vacation. This year we went back to Santa Rosa Beach in Florida. We rented a beautiful beach house http://www.vrbo.com/98671, if you need a place to stay I highly recommend it. It's just a short walk across the street to the beach and the subdivision has a couple of pools, one located right behind our house. This is our second time to rent "Beyond the Sea" and the owners are wonderful to work with.

We spent our days rotating between the pool and the beach, and the evenings watching movies, going to plays, having picnics, taking walks, riding bikes and just generally relaxing and having fun.

Amber got her scan results and her body remains free of cancer! I just can't stop smiling about this news. Just a few months ago the diagnosis and prognosis she was given were hard to take in. Amber has always been one of the healthiest and strongest women I know and to find my friend had advanced disease was heartbreaking. The doctors will continue to scan her every 3 months and keep a very close eye on her.

Through all of her chemo treatments, surgeries and tests, Amber has remained positive and resolved to make the best of whatever happens. She has a strong faith and strong will and both are very inspiring to me and all those who love her.

So...if you see me smiling - it's because my best friend is doing great!

Expresso Brownies - Yum!

Jenni made these incredible brownies and I just had to share the recipe!

Ingredients:

Nonstick vegetable oil cooking spray
1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs
2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons espresso powder
1 (19.8-ounce) box brownie mix (recommended: Duncan Hines)
3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, room temperature

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Spray a 9 by 13-inch baking pan with nonstick spray. Whisk 1/3 cup of water, oil, eggs, and 2 tablespoons espresso powder in a large bowl to blend. Add the brownie mix. Stir until well blended. Stir in the chocolate chips. Transfer the batter to the prepared baking pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the brownies comes out with a few moist crumbs attached, about 35 minutes. Cool completely.

Meanwhile, dissolve the remaining 2 teaspoons of espresso powder in the remaining 2 tablespoons of water in a medium bowl. Whisk in the vanilla. Add the powdered sugar and butter and whisk until smooth. Pour the glaze over the brownies. Refrigerate until the glaze is set. Cut into bite-size pieces. Arrange the brownies on a platter and serve.

I have so much to be thankful for, and I am reminded of that daily. In my new job I travel around to clinics and hospitals to train staff on how to use electronic health records in order to view clinical data. As I walk into these offices I see people coming and going who are struggling with chronic illness, recent surgeries and all levels of disabilities. It is a good reminder to me that we need to take our health seriously. It definitely makes a difference what food we choose to eat, how much we choose to exercise and what harmful substances we choose to introduce into our bodies.

God gave us this wonderful earth on which to grow healthy foods, beautiful landscapes to explore and water to enjoy. All those things are good for us. He did not invent preservatives, genetically engineered foods and artificial sweetners. Even though I LOVE my Coke Zero - I am going to make a more conscious effort to eat foods in their more natural state whenever possible, and start using meat as more of a side dish.

We've been slowly working on our backyard since we moved in. The soil isn't great and it's difficult to get grass to grow in certain areas. We still need to plant some shade trees, but all in all it's come a long way.

Each summer Crockett Park hosts a series of free concerts and I've always had it on my to-do list, but never had actually attended. I have always loved Centennial's Movies in the park and have enjoyed their Shakespeare in the park as well.

The Mammogram Mobile!

The Nashville Komen affiliate will be having a ribbon cutting for the new Mobile Mammography Unit on June 13th at 2pm in Centennial park. If you are available that day, come join the celebration. This Mammogram Mobile will offer screenings to those women and communities that might not have the opportunity otherwise to get a screening. The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the treatment and the outcome - I'm living proof of that one!

I keep seeing this photo that someone creatively crafted using the Royal Couple and comparing them to Cinderella. While I do think it was a fairytale wedding and their are similarities, it's not completely accurate. Also, I feel a little bad for Fergie's girls. They are probably really sweet young ladies who just chose to wear odd hats and were photographed at unfortunate angles.

So to set the record straight....here's are actual photos from Cinderella. She had blonde hair and Charming didn't wear red.

When Jenni was little she used to spend hours analyzing Disney princesses, and when I saw this comparison photo I knew something wasn't quite right.

When I think about my Mom now I don't picture her as she was at the end of her life. I picture her running up and down the stairs at the Home Ec. building, teaching classes and enjoying her students. She was one busy lady and enjoyed every minute of it. It was apparent to everyone that Mom loved teaching and her students loved her right back.

Mom was a very important part of my children's lives. I am so thankful they got to spend so much time with her and were able to build lots of wonderful memories with their Reba.

For me and my friends, she was the neighborhood kool-aid mom. We always had a house or yard full of friends and I don't remember her ever complaining. She and Dad always welcomed our friends with open arms.

I can still close my eyes and remember Mom's scent, she wore a perfume named "unforgettable". That is what she will always be for me and so many others...unforgettable.

I have two fabulous sisters. Linda arrived 14 months before me, so I have never known life without her. From what I hear, she was a little shocked when I arrived and I took some getting used to. Linda was born with strong organizational skills, her toys were put away neatly and her drawers were organized - this is when she was 3! I remember Mom saying she had to put us in separate bedrooms because I kept my living quarters too messy and this was causing sister friction. Other than that we were two peas in a pod -same haircuts, matching outfits, best friends. Of course we had a few moments as well - she tried to get me to pick up a ping pong ball sitting by a copperhead, considered stabbing me while we watched Dark Shadows (our babysitter was asleep) and cut off all my hair with pink paperdoll sissors, but this is normal sister behavior - right?

On Halloween week of 1974, Mom told us that she was going to have a baby. It was obvious she and Dad were shocked, but very happy. Linda and I were very excited and wanted to tell everyone we knew. I remember trick or treating and saying "My mom's going to have a baby!" and of course the person at the door would say "who are you, pull up that mask". I am sure we caused quite a stir of the Henderson social network that night.

In May of 75', tiny Lisa arrived! Looking back I don't know how she ever got any sleep. I remember bumping her crib and saying "she's moving, can I get her up?"

We were so excited to have a little sister and playmate. We dressed her up, taught her weird words, fed her lots of popcorn and took her everywhere - even on some of our dates. Somehow she managed to grow up into a well-balanced beautiful lady.

Praying for Peace

Today it was announced to the world that the FBI's most wanted person Osama bin Laden had been located and killed. He admitted to responsibility for the World Trade Center bombings as well as many other horrific acts. Clearly this man needed to be stopped and brought to justice. I heard multiple interviews today with 9/11 widows, parents and survivors - the sadness on their faces showed that even though bin Laden's death will give them some closure, it will not erase their pain, and can never bring their loved one back.
We still have troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as many other dangerous places. This war is not over, and until it is and our troops are safely home I don't feel we can truly declare peace and begin the celebration.
I am very proud to be living in the United States of America that allows me to live freely. I am very thankful to those who protect and serve our towns, cities and this country. I will continue to pray for peace for our world and wisdom for our world leaders.

The Royal Wedding

There are some things in your life that stick with you. Do you remember what you were you doing on July 29th, 1981?

I do! I was in a cabin at Reelfoot Lake with my Mom, Sisters, Cousin Greg, Aunt Jewel and Grandmother Tucker. We got up at 4am to watch the wedding of Charles and Diana. I remember thinking it was like watching a fairytale play out.

This week Jenni got to experience that same feeling when she and her roommates watched William and Kate's royal wedding. I couldn't help thinking how proud and happy for her sons Diana would have been had she still been here.

Tornado season

Tornadoes are a part of life in the south. I remember as a small child, a tornado blew away our wooden fort that Dad had built us in our backyard. It didn't harm our house, but got the fort in the backyard. The fact that the wind got close enough to the house to destroy our fort made a big impression on me. I also remember being little and Mom telling us that we were going to have to take cover because there was a storm headed our way. Our "safe place" at that time was our hallway. Linda and I proceeded to take all the covers off the beds and pile them in the hallway. We literally took cover!

Tuscaloosa, Alabama tornado

This past week a F5 tornado went through the south. One of the areas that took a direct massive hit was Tuscaloosa. It was terrifying to see those images and know there were people we loved in the path of that huge swirling cloud of destruction. After several harrowing hours we did get the news that Aunt Jane, Uncle John, Hayley, Jonathan, Grayson, Beth and Louis had made it through safely. Lisa finally heard from her friends in the area and they are safe as well. Although, I hear Lana crawled in her dryer as the tornado took down most of her apartment complex.

Everyone has terrifying stories from that day and the photos of the damage are unbelievable and heartbreaking. Of course, there are many families that are also grieving, because many lives were lost that day. Please join me in supporting and praying for everyone touched by this storm.

Dr. Whitworth visit

I had my check up with Dr. Whitworth this week. I am continuing to have some nerve pain in the right side of my chest, but they reassured me if it is intermittent pain then it's totally normal. Evidently it takes years for all those nerves to re-generate. Also, they say it is perfectly normal to continue to have phantom pain where the tumor was. It's all VERY strange, but as long as they say it's normal I will just deal with it and go on. I have so much to be thankful for!

TV Land Awards

Welcome Back Kotter cast

I was a child of the 70s and even though we only had 4 or 5 channels to choose from we had some great shows. This year's TV Land Awards show reunited some of my favorites.

Hall and Oates also got the Music icon award this year and they sounded better than ever. The whole auditorium seemed to be vibrating with love and happiness as they all reunited with their TV families and friends.

Even though my Mom is no longer with us on this earth, there are so many reminders that she is still with me every day. Just today I walked outside and saw some beautiful purple iris blooming in my yard. Mother loved her flower gardens and she always had some fragrant beautiful blooms. Dad did a great job of diving bulbs to make sure we could all have some of her flowers for our yards.

The last few weeks have been very busy with my new job, and I am cherishing my weekend days. There are so many changes to get used to and so much to learn. For the past nine years I have driven to an office and worked with a set group of people. This job is very different, I am traveling to different sites in Tennessee and training new people each week. It's quite a change, but I am really enjoying it. The people we work with have been very nice, and it is interesting to hear all their stories. It seems on a daily basis we are treated with stories of funny adventures with children, grandchildren, husbands and family.

There are also those moments that stick with you long after you leave the clinic. We met a lady last week who had a very high grade oral cancer. The doctors have told her that typically with this type she should live another five years. I am sure she still has her moments, but said she had made peace with the diagnosis and was concentrating on making the most of each day. It was apparent that some of her co-workers are still having a hard time dealing with her diagnosis. It just verifies to me that we are each on our own unique journey and must live each day to the fullest.

I am convinced my former work spouse and fabulous friend, Katherine can turn anything into a party! This is probably why she is one of my favorite people.

Katherine had asked me a few weeks ago if I would teach her infant CPR, and what to do for a choking infant or child. She has a precious new baby and a sweet and busy 4 year old and wanted a refresher course. Several other new Moms expressed interest in learning as well and before I knew it a she had organized a CPR party, complete with food and drinks!

We had separate rooms set up for skill practice and for partying, just to keep things organized. I took Josh and Jenni along to help, both of them have Red Cross certifications as well. I hope and pray none of us ever need to use these skills, but it's great knowledge to have.

I think one of the reasons that breast cancer gets lots of attention is because breasts are something that people notice. You never hear - wow she's got a great looking colon, or look how big her kidneys are? Breasts are another matter. I ran across this photo and it is pretty powerful. I hope it won't offend.

The first time you see yourself without breasts, it certainly takes your breath away. The only photos I had done after my mastectomy were the ones the doctors took. I think this is a very brave woman to show the world in living color what breast cancer takes from you.

We hear about cancer research and statistics on TV every day, but I think it's important to put faces to the cancer battle. When you can look into the eyes of someone in the trenches of their battle, or a survivor it makes it much more real.

Once again, it breaks my heart every time I hear of another cancer diagnosis. In the past month I have had far too many emails from someone who has a friend or family member who has been diagnosed recently with cancer. There is too much cancer in this world and I think it's important to support research to help find ways to battle cancer. I also think we have to focus on prevention and living a healthy lifestyle. I can't help but believe that our environment/diet/lifestyle is also playing a big role in many cancers.

Please remember to see your doctor and report any changes in your bowel or bladder habits, moles, breast or other tissues. Women, listen to your intuition - if something doesn't seem right - have it checked out!

I have been doing a lot of training in Chattanooga and have been shadowing the trainer that will cover the Eastern part of the state. Her name is Camille and she is fabulous and we bonded pretty quickly while driving from clinic to clinic to train. Once I get comfortable training by myself I will be mostly covering middle and west TN. I can't wait to drop in and have lunch with my Dad!

Even though I still miss my friends at Onlife, everyone at Shared Health has been so nice and helpful - it is making the transition much easier.

I've loved Marlo Thomas since the days of That Girl. I have always admired her for continuing her father's work with St. Jude. I've had several friends, and friends children who have been helped by St. Jude. I love that they never turn any child away due to lack of money or insurance.

Farewell to Onlife Health...hello new adventures

For almost 9 years I have called Onlife (formerly Gordian) my work home. When I started there it was a very small company. There were 5 Health Coaches when I joined their ranks - 3 full time and 2 part time. I was part timer #3. The company's basic mission when I joined, and to this day, was/is promotion of Health and Wellness. I had previously worked in the disease management space and while I enjoyed that, I was always interested in prevention and this is what attracted me to Onlife. Through the years I wore several hats - Health Coach, Clinical Trainer and Clinical Development Manager.

One of the best things about Onlife is the people that work there. I made some lasting friendships while I was there and I cannot imagine not having those people in my life. Many of them were my biggest supporters while I was going through breast cancer surgery and therapy. It's comforting to know we will always be in each other's lives. My last few days at Onlife were very special. I had lunch with friends, a potluck with the coaching center and a party or two after work. My friend Amy even made me a "break-up" cd to listen to at my desk on my last day. It was fabulous and made me smile when I felt like crying.

As for my new adventure...I was alerted to a job at Shared Health in Chattanooga. They were looking for a Nashville based trainer to train their electronic health record software and other e-tools for health care to clinics and medical facilities in Middle and West TN. I was not really looking for a new job, but it sounded very intriguing so I checked the posting out. I decided to apply and ended up driving to Chattanooga for an interview. After hearing about the company and how they are positioning themselves in the industry I was very interested. Electronic medical records, health records, electronic prescriptions and tracking looks like where healthcare is heading. Of course taking this position meant stepping out of my comfort zone and learning brand new things, and that was a little scary. After much thought, prayer and discussion I felt it was a good career move. To sum things up, I was offered and accepted the job!

Please say a prayer and send good thoughts that this transition will be easy for me.

Have you ever browsed the snack aisle at a gas station? It is amazing! When I go to the grocery store, they have 1 or maybe 2 types of bugles or chex mix. At the gas station you can find flavors you never knew existed, and honestly some that probably shouldn't.

However, I do recommend the chocolate peanut butter bugles - they are perfect for those 2am munchies!

Cousins

Dad and Sherry were in town this weekend to see a show at the Ryman, so we took the opportunity to have a impromptu family gathering. We decided to go to Brentwood Hills church on Sunday morning to visit with some of our cousins on the Tucker side of the family. My cousin Will and his precious family will be moving to Uganda later this week and we wanted to make sure we got to see them before they departed. After church the whole family group headed to Las Palmas for a nice tasty Mexican lunch. We were joined by Joyce, Elizabeth, Paul, Mike, Lori and their kids as well.

Will told us some about where they will be living, types of food they will have access to and their work there. He says they have a Chinese restaurant in Uganda, which is very similar to our Chinese restaurants here, but no Mexican food. Maybe we can ship him some chips and salsa occasionally.

March is National Nutrition Month

This month is National Nutrition Month and the ADA has some great resources on their site. They even have printouts that are helpful to teach your kids the importance of fruits and vegetables. The theme this year is "Eat right with color".

Some others like encourage people to Eat the Rainbow or Paint your Plate during this month. I am currently reading Kris Carr's new book titled Crazy Sexy Diet. I am enjoying it so far and I agree with her message to have a more plant based diet to keep our bodies and minds in tip-top shape.

Here are some of Kris' suggestions for eating the rainbow:

Red – Red peppers, tomatoes, grapefruit, radishes, kidney beans, red rice, red quinoa
Pink – Grapefruit, guava, pink beans
Green – Kale, collards, broccoli, green beans, lentils, edamame
Yellow – Pineapple, corn, squash, pears, split peas, millet
Orange – Sweet potatoes, mangoes, carrots, apricots
Purple and blue – Grapes, blueberries, eggplant
Black and brown – Black beans, black rice, brown rice
White – Cauliflower, mushrooms, quinoa, pearl barley

Make sure you check it out, eat those veggies, and don't forget to shake your tail! (exercise is important too)

Prayers for Japan

The images are of the damage from the tsunami in Japan are heartbreaking. I read a quote today from a mother who was caught in the tsunami and only able to save 2 of her 3 children. She said; nothing else matters except my family. I read another quote from a father who would not let go of his 3 week old baby so it could be examined. The reporter said he just kept saying; I must protect my children. This yet another reminder that the people we love are what really matters in this life.

My heart goes out to the people of Japan, the rescue workers and the many volunteers who will assist these people in their time of great need. Verizon is always good about matching their employees donations dollar for dollar. I am thankful they offer us this opportunity.

I can't stop smiling

Let me start by saying I realize God is good ALL the time, but sometimes he still amazes me.

Six months ago my best friend Amber began a journey with cancer. Originally they thought she had a dermoid cyst and when they went to remove that it was found instead to be colon cancer that had invaded and attached to her ovary. The doctor in Birmingham did a great job in removing all the cancer he could see. Further scans showed liver lesions as well. Amber endured six chemo treatments over the last few months which shrunk the liver lesions to operable size.

This is where Dr. Beau Kelly came in. On Thursday, he removed those remaining two liver tumors and was able to get clear margins in the surrounding tissue. As you can imagine, she has had some surgical pain and recovery will take a while but we are so thankful for the successful surgery. Amber will be watched very closely for the next couple of years, but as of now (we are praying forever will remain) is cancer free!

I feel a celebration coming on!

First prime time breast lump

Breast cancer, it's not a new thing but it wasn't talked about openly in public for a long time. Women used to suffer in silence and not discuss their womanly areas.

I remember this episode vividly. I don't know if I saw the original airing in 1973 or if it was on re-run, but I remember it was shocking to me. Edith found a lump in her breast and she did not want to upset Archie, so she dealt with it all on her own. Archie wasn't known to be endearing and in this episode you saw a bit of his tender side.

Through the years it became less and less taboo to talk about. I remember Kate Jackson, Olivia Newton John and Jacyln Smith all being diagnosed with breast cancer and speaking out about their personal battles. I think it is important for people, celebrity or not, to speak up and talk about their battle. It is encouraging as a survivor to hear others tell their story. I think it is also good for healthy people to hear, it makes them aware that it can happen to anyone anytime and we all need to be familiar enough with our own bodies to report any changes.

Last week my friend Susan lost her father William Clark Kirk, he was 93 years old. I know that children are supposed to outlive their parents, but it is still so hard when it happens. Clark was a veteran and seeing his widow presented with our flag and hearing taps played was an honor. Thank you Clark Kirk for all your contributions to our country, your community and thank you for giving us our wonderful friend Susan.

After the service, we stopped at the Rusty Fish Hook for a bite to eat. Evidently this was one of Clark's favorite restaurants.

We love you Susan and we are here for you!

Barbarino, Jesus and Miss Lora

I was talking to a friend recently and they brought up Miss Lora. Wow did that bring back memories! Miss Lora was a lady who never married who served as a dorm mother and also as a bible school teacher. She was actually my mother-in-law's dorm mother in the 50s.

Miss Lora was known for her passion for teaching children's bible classes and always made sure they were very interactive as well as educational. Miss Lora taught the 4 & 5 year old class at Henderson for decades. I can still picture the little wooden chairs all sitting in a circle. We would file in, take a seat and she would lead us in songs and tell us bible stories. Most weeks she used dolls to act out the parts of the story, while adding in sound effects as needed. I still remember the story of the apostles and the rushing mighty wind (which sounded a lot like a vacuum cleaner). I always loved how she had the dolls dressed up in biblical attire.

All these memories of Miss Lora reminded me of something else; When Josh was 5 years old I took him to Miss Lora's class on one of our visits home to Henderson. By this time Miss Lora was assisted by a helper, because she was elderly. Josh was finishing up his project and I was looking around the room and drinking in all the memories there. That is when I realized that the part of Jesus all these years has been played by the Vinnie Barbarino doll!

For you youngsters who might be reading this: Vinnie Barbarino was a character played by a young John Travolta in the series Welcome Back Kotter. I really wouldn't compare his character to Jesus, but I guess he did have the right look.

Dinner Club

Saturday we hosted our monthly dinner club. This month's theme was "Guilty Pleasures" or as some called it "Dietician's gone wild!" We have three dieticians in our group and I think they enjoyed the evening more than anyone else.

The menu consisted of all those foods that we secretly love, but would not readily admit it. (after all we do work for a Wellness company). Everyone also submitted a song they love to sing along to, but only when alone in their car. Such a fun night!

To bake or not to bake...

I love to bake, but I rarely have time these days. I read a great book a few months ago called Confessions of a (closet) Master Baker, and the whole time my mouth watered. Gesine has such great ideas and recipes. I am going to attempt one of her creations for my family this Valentines day. I just have to decide which one - maybe the Lovers, the dreamers and me cake, or maybe the Because your Mine cake. Hmm...decisions...decisions
